I Know I Did a Good Thing

Its not the first good thing I've done, but for some reason this one really didn't make me feel any better.

In our community a young boy, age 10, Jeremy Sexton, drowned a couple of days before school let out for summer vacation.

He was a bus friend to my two younger children. His family lived in a trailor park not too far from us. They had four boys total... same ages as four of my own children. I see the family around our community often, in various activities such as softball and basketball.

Tonight our community had a benefit spaghetti dinner in honor of Jeremy. The also had a chinese auction and 50/50 raffle.

One of my sons was lucky enough to win a Mongoose bike and I was lucky enough to win $208 in the 50/50 drawing. I in turn told the announcer we would like to donate our winnings to the family, as I saw it was the only thing to do.

I had been fighting back tears ever since the boy was taken to heaven and received a round of applause I felt very humbled by. I busied myself straightening our table and fighting back another round of tears.

I did a good thing, I know. But somehow I don't feel anyone could ever do enough. $208. Yes, we could have used the money. But my 10 yr old came home with a new bike. Their 10 yr old is gone.

Yes, you did a wonderful thing. We can't bring him back. We will never be able to heal the hole that his death has created in that family's life. All we can do is pray for them. The money raised for the family will certainly help them out but I think it has been the support of the community that has helped them the most
